We are all seeing it here in El Paso. Gas Costs are creeping up, just like the Spring temperatures! Look around town and you see $2.39/Gallon and up! Plus, Summer is just around the corner and that means Summer road trips. Yikes! What’s a driver to do? Well listen up. We have a few suggestions that, although may not completely make gas cheap come fill-up time, will give you some needed relief from scorching gas costs.

As the saying goes, “there’s an app for that” and here is where we will start. Right now, there are a number of downloadable gas apps you can add to your smartphone. The more well known is GasBuddy. With GasBuddy, you see a listing of gas prices either in the city or near your neighborhood and you choose where to go. You can even search by state or country. Really handy app. The information on the site is crowdsourced, meaning that users share what they pay at the pump. Another similar app is called Gas Guru, which gets its pricing information directly from the Oil Price Information Service (OPIS), a refiner and supplier industry resource.

Another factor to consider when going to fill-up is what day and time you are doing it in. You may have heard that gas prices can and do change during the course of a week, and even on the same day, depending on the day and time. Gotta’ be an urban legend, right? Well, There’s actually some truth to that. A recent study showed that around the country, gas tends to be cheaper on certain days.  One trend: gas in many states actually tends to be cheaper on weekends.

Finally, use a gas station credit card. Yeah, we know what you’re thinking. Interest! Debt! It’s true that if you opt to do what many people do – only purchase gas with a gas station / oil company credit – you’re going to have to do a bit of bookkeeping. But it’s not terribly difficult. The trick is to make sure that you pay off the card’s balance in full immediately (or at least before the card’s monthly no-interest “grace period” ends). The easiest way to do this? Pay off what you put on the card that very same day. The benefits? Nearly every major gas station will give you discounts at the pump, as much as 10% off. And they often offer rewards points as a bonus.

Remember, all of the above plus keeping your vehicle in good working order by performing routine maintenance, will help save you at the pump!
