Rust is truly a natural enemy of a car lover and his/her car. Not only does rust ruin your car’s appearance, but it compromises its structural integrity. Not good. Therefore, you want to fix rust spots early before they become real trouble later on down the road.

So why does rust occur in the first place? Rust is basically a chemical reaction between iron or steel and moisture and oxygen.  Today’s automotive paints are advanced to prevent rust from occurring naturally. However, a rock, large hail, or heavy debris can compromise your paint job thus exposing your car to rust.

There are a couple of ways to fight rust. One of these ways is to simply paint the scratch, dent, or affected area of your car. Use rust-protected paint whenever possible. If the cuts or dents are deep, seek help from a professional.

A simple way to prevent rust is by simply washing your car on a regular basis. Washing off dirt, bird droppings, anything that can be abrasive to your paint, will help preserve your car.

When removing rust, there are a number of home-remedies you may have heard about. The most well-known DIY treatment is Coca-Cola. Depending on where the rust is on your car and type of metal you are treating will determine your success.

Another trick is using margarita fixings. Yep, you heard right. Again, depending on the nature of the metal and the rust location determines the effectiveness. Start by spraying lime juice on the rust spot, then sprinkle salt. Make sure the spot is soaked with this mixture. Allow it to cure for up to three hours. Afterwards, you can remove the rust with a sponge.

Of course, the most 100% effective way of treating rust spots is to bring your car on down to Pete Solis Collision Center, El Paso’s Auto Body Shop.
