Imagine driving along on an open road. Depending on your location, if an accident occurs, help could be a long way off. Especially if phone signal is low or you don’t have roadside assistance service. It could very well be a dicey situation. For times like these, when help will take time to get to you, driving at night, or you need first aid quickly, make sure you have an emergency roadside kit stored in your vehicle!
A simple emergency roadside kit can help keep you warm, hydrated, fed, and safe until help arrives. So, what should it contain? That will depend on geography, driving habits, and the age of your vehicle. It is better to be over prepared than under prepared if you can help it. The following is a standard emergency roadside kit everyone should have in their vehicle. You can then add other items as warranted, depending on what destination you are traveling toward.
Flashlight and spare batteries
A few blankets
Ice scraper (if you live in an area that receives a lot of snow)
A gallon of water
Roadside flair or Reflective Safety Triangle
Once all of these items are assembled together, they should be placed somewhere safe in your vehicle. The emergency roadside kit can be strapped down inside the trunk or even tucked away under a passenger seat. The items do not necessarily have to be placed in a toolbox or other heavy-duty box. Many retail outlets and home improvement stores also sell prepackaged kits that you can use.
Finally, if you do ever find yourself in a potentially dangerous situation on the road, it is always good to make sure that the situation is stable and that you are safe, before diving straight into the emergency kit. If your car breaks down in the middle of the road or you are involved in a bad car crash, try your best to get off the road and out of harm’s way.
