It can be downright “cringeworthy.” You pull your car into your garage, people get out and you hear the car door slam into the wall. Just like that, your car  has door dings. We’ve all been there, but there’s good news. If you’ve got a tight squeeze in your garage, you may be able to use a simple “pool noodle” (foam pool toy) to help protect your car doors. It’s simple to make and easy to install. Let’s get started.

Here’s what you are going to need before we begin: Measuring tape and pencil, box cutter, set of long Styrofoam “pool noodles”, and a roll of mounting tape.

Step 1: Using your box cutter, start to cut your dry “pool noodle” in half, lengthwise. Take care when cutting (safety first) and be sure to do so on a flat surface such as a workbench or the garage floor.

Step 2: Determine the height of where your car door meets the garage wall by carefully opening your car door against the wall. Using a pencil, lightly mark the point of contact on the garage wall.

Step 3: Draw a horizontal guideline across the garage wall that will serve as your guide.

Step 4: Start attaching the cut half-noodle strips to the garage wall with pieces of mounting tape placed on the edges of the noodle. Make sure the noodle is attached to the garage wall, horizontally.

Step 5: Test your finished work. Carefully open your car door, and it should nicely meet the soft padding of the “pool noodle”.

Walla! No more banging the walls of the garage by car doors flinging open! Depending on the dimensions of your garage, you may consider adding additional noodle mountings.
